Whitney Houston Biopic : I Wanna Dance With Somebody
the inspiring trailer for the Whitney Houston biopic : “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” unveiled…Ten years after her death, Whitney Houston will be reborn on the big screen in “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”. A biopic carried by Naomi Ackie (“Star Wars – Episode IX”) whose trailer has been unveiled.
If the Christmas nights are generally associated with Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston could well animate the next ones. Thanks to the biopic I Wanna Dance With Somebody, expected on December 21 in American theaters, and whose first images have been unveiled.
Discovered in Star Wars – Episode IX or season 3 of Master of None, Naomi Ackie embodies the singer and actress who died ten years ago, on February 11, 2012, in this feature film which promises to make us discover “the Whitney that you have never known”. A necessarily ambitious program for a biopic around such a star, while the genre is strewn with pitfalls.
But I Wanna Dance With Somebody, the Whitney Houston Biopic is written by a specialist in the genre, Anthony McCarten. It is to him that we owe the scripts of The Theory of Everything, The Two Popes, Darkest Hours or Bohemian Rhapsody, which we think of especially when we see the images of what could be the climax of the story: Whitney Houston’s performance at the Super Bowl, January 27, 1991.
As the Gulf War had just begun, the artist sang the American national anthem in front of 73,813 supporters and some 115 million viewers worldwide. And transformed the “Star Spangled Banner”, with its warlike accents, into a song for the freedom of Black Americans. A subject that we glimpse in the trailer and that we could find at the heart of the film.
Because it is already very present in the work of director Kasi Lemmons, to whom we owe the biopic on Harriet Traubman, who had helped many slaves to flee in the South of the United States. Or the Self Made mini-series, on Madam C. J. Walker, pioneer of hair care for black women. With I Wanna Dance With Somebody, she looks at a personality much better known to the general public, and it will be necessary to see how her film stands out from the excellent documentary by Kevin MacDonald released in 2018.
You can watch “Bohemian Rhapsody” and many other biopic on our VOD.
